An open patch where every bird faces forward. The direction is recalculated whenever the uniformed penguin turns.
01Origin memorandum
The first reliable record describes a silent bird arriving at the edge of the huddle already dressed for an inspection nobody had scheduled.
No witness remembers the tunic being issued. By sunset, its four buttons had become the Colony's most dependable points of reference. The penguin said nothing; the absence of a statement was copied, stamped and treated as guidance.
The face remained level. The minutes recorded unanimous calm.
02Unofficial map of the ice
The Colony has landmarks, although moving ice makes their names more durable than their locations.
Button Bay
A dark inlet shaped, according to the archive, like a regulation button. Later surveys call that generous.
The Quiet Shelf
The windiest point on the ice and therefore the official location for announcements too important to hear.
03Observer protocol
Visitors may observe the fiction safely by remembering that certainty is the central joke.
On arrival
Stamp the imaginary register, inspect all four imaginary buttons and report that conditions are historically normal.
During a storm
Consult the face. If unchanged, the weather is administratively unchanged too. Physical evidence may file an appeal.
On departure
Leave in the direction labelled forward. If two signs disagree, choose the one the other penguins are watching.

A voluntary gathering whose empty places are carefully counted.

A mobile compass point located directly in front of the tunic.

The future community, if and when official channels actually open. It does not exist yet.
